When it comes to choosing patio furniture, there are many things to consider. First, consider your current existing décor or theme. Is there a colour scheme or motif? Do you want something retro or contemporary?
If that’s not a big deal to you, you must also consider the amount of space you have. You want the furniture to be laid out with good flow of movement around the pieces, so guests can freely stand and move around, converse with each other, or explore different areas.
And room for you, too, especially when you’re bringing out drinks or snacks for people. Another thing to consider is the function or purpose of your entertaining space.
Is it a sanctuary for just one or two people, with maybe two chairs and a table? Or do you like to host family dinners and barbecue nights, having many guests over at once? Will the furniture be used for sitting and conversing, or do you need a dining table and chairs?
No matter the purpose, having patio furniture is crucial to outdoor enjoyment. And more importantly, having comfortable patio furniture will ensure enjoyment of the outdoors, and please your guests entirely.
Perhaps you have a larger yard and have a dining set, but need an additional seating area in a different part of your yard, which you can retire to and enjoy conversation with friends, or sit and simply enjoy the wonderful outside air.
Today we review the four-piece rattan wicker set by Merax.
This set has four pieces: two spacious armchairs, one sofa, and one table with a tempered glass top. Each chair and sofa comes with a white cushion, while the rattan is all black.
The table’s glass top allows you to use the table for drinks, meals, and decorative items, like flowers, while tying in the look. The glass suctions to the rattan frame, so you don’t have to worry about it sliding around or falling off during some wind.
This particular set we are reviewing is a great buy for many reasons. The first being that the rattan is weather-resistant! It cannot be destroyed, and the colour will stay colourfast for years and years.
It will not fade. Nothing worse than a terribly faded old patio set that may be comfortable to sit upon but looks dirty and unwelcoming.
Rattan retains its crisp appearance and is very easy to clean. You can let the rain wash it off, but we recommend wiping it down occasionally with some damp paper towels and perhaps a bit of mild soap. The cushion covers are removable and washable, and waterproof.
Rattan is a great fabric for outdoor furniture. It is thick strips of synthetic material woven together in a criss-cross pattern, almost similar to wicker.
If you like the look of wicker, you will probably love rattan! It has some advantages over wicker made of natural fibers. We find wicker to be a rather weak material for furniture.
It tends to do well in hot climates as it allows airflow and does not experience as much damage from extreme elements. However, rattan is great for climates that experience different seasons, because it is extremely durable.
It is also far more comfortable to sit on, because it does not fill one with anxiety of breaking the weave, and it is slightly flexible. It conforms a little to the body.
The chairs and sofa each hold up to 286 pounds, while the table can support up to 132 pounds. That’s a lot of boxed wine!
The washable nature of this set lends it to many uses without fear of damage: saucy pizzas, barbecues, drinks, even tea parties.
The height and width of each furniture piece is just right for backyard lounging. The chairs are good for just about anyone, and the sofa can fit a very tall person (much taller than six feet).
They are also low enough to the ground that children will feel safe sitting in them. The sofa is four feet wide, so keep in mind that if you are buying an outdoor sofa for lying around, you won’t be able to lie around without your legs hanging over the edge.
You will have to assemble this yourself, but there are some tricks we can share to make it easier. First, lay out all pieces on the ground with according hardware to make sure everything is in place.
Then loosely insert each screw, just enough to hold the furniture together. Don’t tighten until you’re sure everything is totally lined up.
You may need an extra pair of hands to get everything lined up and held in place while you tighten the screws. Keep in mind that no extra screws are shipped, so make sure you follow the instructions carefully and take your time.
