What Is The Best Lightweight Backpack Leaf Blower ?

STIHL SMALL BACKPACK BLOWER

Obviously, when it comes to leaf blowers then you will have some considerations beside simply whether it can achieve results.
Whereas power output is a serious concern, there is also the small question of how much the unit will weigh.
Because backpack blowers are, by their nature, made to be worn, then it quickly becomes important to ensure they are comfortable and supportive.
For the smaller or lighter gardener, some backpack models may seem rather weighty.
When it comes to choosing the optimal weight for a backpack blower it is necessary to consider the following factors;
• YOUR STRENGTH AND STAMINA – it helps to be realistic about how long you will be able to lift this device for. We recommend trying a few models out prior to purchase.

woman and backpack blower
• EXACTLY HOW POWERFUL YOU NEED THE BLOWER TO BE – it can be tempting to go for the biggest and best blower on the market. But before you unleash Armageddon in your backyard, consider if you really need this much power. For light, domestic use in smaller yards it may be that a far less powerful model makes a smarter choice.

naked gardener

• IT’S A TRADE-OFF – ultimately, when choosing a backpack leaf blower it is always going to be a trade-off between power versus weight. Gas guzzling models may produce greater displays of strength, but they are also likely to weigh a ton as well. By and large, the lightest units are the ones that are electrically powered – either by mains or backpack (although, do check the weight of the battery.

• BE REALISTIC – A backpack leaf blower is never going to be the lightest choice. In fact, they’re usually the heaviest option out there. So looking for a lightweight leaf blower is like looking for treacle which isn’t sweet. Remember that comfort and an ergonomic design is worth its weight (literally) in gold. A backpack that weighs in heavier may still be the more comfortable option for your back in the long run, especially if you have a large area to cover or will be wearing it for a long time.

How Much Does  A Backpack Leaf Blower Weigh?

baby and leafblower

Typically a backpack leaf blower is going to start from around 8-22 pounds and become steadily heavier from there on.
An electric backpack leaf blower generally weighs less than its gas powered counterparts.

How Do You Start A Backpack Leaf Blower?

How Do You Start A Backpack Leaf Blower?

Most gas powered blowers utilize a mixture of gas and oil. Getting the exact combination right is important, as it may damage the leaf blower if the proportions are not correct.
The recommended formula is usually 2.5 ounces of 2 cycle oil per gallon of gas.
To start a gas powered leaf blower you would normally put the gas and oil into a can and shake it gently. Then place the primer bulb and slowly depress it six times. Put the choke on.
Note, a four cycle engine will not normally require the oil and operate using straight gas.
The cord will need to be activated anything from one to four times to get it going. Let the engine run for ten seconds.

Which Backpack Will Last The Longest?

muscle man and leafblower

If it’s longevity you care about, then you will want to choose well from the list of options available.
But as a general guide, a backpack leaf blower can be expected to last for about 1000 hours before needing some R and R.
Perhaps this doesn’t sound like much, but depending on your usage, this could be around a decade.
Remember, any tool will last longer if it is maintained well. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions including getting the balance of gas and oil right.
Also take care to change the spark plug and air filter when needed.

Which Are The Quietest Backpack Leaf Blowers?

the quietest leafblower

Unfortunately leaf blowing is not quiet. In fact some leaf blowers are really quite loud.
Generally a backpack leaf blower is going to be putting out around 100 decibels. And this, if you have neighbors who complain, or just EARS can be a problem!
We would definitely advise the use of considerate blowing – confining your backyard tornadoes to socially acceptable hours and always using ear defenders when you blow.
There are however some blowers which are a little quieter, it is worth checking out the full specifications to see how they compare in terms of decibels.

Tips For Choosing A Backpack Leaf Blower

Best backpack leaf blower

THE DESIGN

red backpack blower

Pretty obviously, you are going to be wearing this thing on your back, so it is important that it sits comfortably.
They may cost a little more, but padded straps and an ergonomic design will help distribute the load a little more pleasingly than a basic option. And remember, with the right design, you won’t necessarily notice the extra load you are carrying.

THE WEIGHT

kid leafblower

Unfortunately, backpack leaf blowers tip the scales as some of the heaviest models out there. But there are still options for a lightweight experience if you do your homework (check out our picks!)

THE MECHANICS

mechanics of leafblower

When it comes to leaf blowing there is but one consideration; the nozzle.
They can come in different widths and either be narrower, or wider and more flat. The latter are considered the better design. Some units come with attachments and ways to adjust them, so there’s no need to settle for just one fitting.

THE ENVIRONMENT

leafblowers and the environment

Uh-oh we have to give you the bad news; leaf blowing is not necessarily the most environmental of pastimes.
There are a whole host of reasons why leaf blowing is likely to put Gaia’s nose out of joint; starting with the volume (some leaf blowers are NOISY!) if this is a concern, then check out some of the quietest ones available.
But also there’s the potential effect of the engine on the air itself.
Unfortunately studies have concluded that a half hours blowing with a typical two stroke blower equals the same amount of hydrocarbon emissions as driving a Ford Raptor truck a stonking 3887 miles!

THE MAKER

best-leaf-blowers

When it comes to backpack leaf blowers your best bet is to pick a respected brand name, we recommend Stihl, Greenworks, Echo, Husqvarna and RedMax amongst others!

THE CONTROLS

Look for the most comfortable throttle and handling controls, which can be easily reached and don’t strain you after hours of use.

Alternative Uses For Your Backpack Leaf Blower

boxer leafblower

Tempting though it might be to blow your best buddy’s beard sideways or try and fix your face with your leaf blower, it is probably advisable not to.
Check out our section on What Not To Do With Your Leaf blower!
Likewise, leaf blowers may seem like a quick way of drying your dog down after a walk in the rain, but we would advise against it!
That said, there are still off label uses for your backpack blower; the most obvious is snow blowing. Sometimes the heavy duty end of the market can prove a huge boon for snow clearing.
Likewise, if you need to clean an air vent of any description, then blow away! Leaf blowers make great ways to clean up your lawn mower as well proving useful in clearing gutters.
Finally, your leaf blower might make a good way of drying up your freshly washed car in a way that doesn’t leave a smudge and will keep it gleaming for days!

Check out this video by Stihl about snow blowing with a leaf blower!

What Shouldn’t I Do With A Backpack Leaf Blower?

dog and blower

The kid in you might be desperate to blow your dog into the air or launch missiles around the yard, but deep down you know it is a bad idea.
But there’s other precautions you should take with your backpack leaf blower.
It is not advisable to use a leaf blower in the rain, or in high winds. Also don’t take it on any ladders, or anywhere high up. Lastly, give them a wide berth and make sure there are no passerbys for about 50 feet around.

This gas powered blower by manufacturer Poulan boasts some impressive credentials, an air speed of 200 mph and a cfm of 475. Coming with a 2 year warranty, this backpack leaf blower has the advantage of being (relatively) light (for a backpack blower) and also comes with nicely padded shoulder straps and a load reducing harness, to take the strain off your back.

WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?

poulan pro

As with anything in life, the Poulan Pro PR48BT has its naysayers – so let’s start by listing the concerns with this model.
Some folk have experienced trouble with Poulan customer service, but for the main part, things work fine out of the box and they keep on going well for a long time after.
Things that people like about this product is the amount of power it generates and the speeds it is capable of reaching (200mph) despite not being the most expensive blower on the market.
Other virtues include it handling not only dried leaves well, but also taking mulch and other garden debris in its stride.
We think this is, overall, a great garden backpack blower for general use.

THE OVERVIEW

greenworks 3

Perhaps you don’t like the idea of gas and are concerned of the dangers a fuel powered blower will have on the environment.
Whatever your reasons for choosing a battery powered backpack leaf blower, you can be assured that the Greenworks 80V will be up to the job.
While it is true that a battery powered leaf blower comes with a list of drawbacks, they make great choices for homeowners who are only going to give them light to middling use.
This blower boasts a brushless motor and can reach speeds of 145 mph/ 580 cfm. So this is not as powerful as the gas and fuel powered models, but still perfectly adequate for most gardeners’ needs.
After all, most of us really don’t need a tornado whipping up in the backyard and the local environment will probably thank you for choosing the minimal option!
With turbo button for increased power and a variable trigger for speed, this is a handy little tool to have and has the advantage of weighing in at only 8.17 pounds!

WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?

greenworks 80v

On the whole, the majority of responses have been positive to the Greenworks 80v.
It is simple, light and effective and works well out of the box.
The lightweight option makes it attractive to smaller gardeners, or women.
We have also been impressed with Greenworks customer support, which has offered explanations and advice to customers experiencing difficulties with the product.
If we had one concern, it would the battery span – less than 30 minutes on full power. Greenworks customer services have explained how the battery is only designed for top power speed for between 15 and 30 minutes, so if that’s going to be a problem it might be best to get two batteries.
So if your yard or garden is larger, it might not be the choice for you, otherwise, full speed ahead!
