Today we review the Winchester trellis by Dura-Trel, a beautiful classic design in mocha vinyl. This trellis is a great and simple way to add some beauty to your yard while increasing garden space.
The trellis is a classic feature in landscaping and produce farming that has been around for thousands and thousands of years.
Their exact place and time of invention is unknown but have proven over the years to provide many uses for the sake of farming and for creating beautiful surroundings.
Traditionally, trellises are made of wood. However, wood, being a natural material, is prone to cracking, peeling, and rotting over time. It requires a lot of maintenance as well as paint or stain, and will eventually have to be replaced.
More and more we are seeing trellises made of more durable materials like polyvinyl chloride. This is a great material for yard and garden accessories because it does not fade, crack, or peel.
In fact this trellis, made of polyvinyl chloride, is guaranteed to last with a twenty-year warranty and will not discolour. We usually see PVC arbors and trellises in white, but this one is special as it comes in a lovely mocha colour, which will blend in perfectly with all kinds of plant life.
This trellis does require some assembly, but is very easy to put together. It has pre-cut and pre-drilled holes, and comes with all hardware you will need to put it together.
It is easy to install, too: you can install it against wood, siding, or a log wall. It comes with a wall mounting kit, of course, making it very convenient and easy to set up. It has two by two-inch posts.
Another interesting feature of this trellis, separating it from others, is its rather gothic shape. Its decorative are varied heights for an arch resembling a medieval gate. It measures 96 inches at its highest point, and is 57 inches wide.
Its vinyl contains the highest concentration of titanium dioxide for strong UV protection, giving you the comfort of knowing its colour will not fade.
This trellis would look great anywhere, whether to cover an unsightly area or create a focal point somewhere along your fence. This trellis is designed to be mounted to something, but if you would like to use it freestanding, you can attach PVC poles or other sturdy structure to the posts to keep it in place.
Keep in mind that this trellis only weighs 24 pounds, so it must be attached to something to stand up to the wind.
A couple of tips for installation: when installing the horizontal rails, make sure the holes are facing up on each rail. This is not mentioned in the instructions, but one of the final steps is to secure each rail with a screw.
Secondly, you can measure 6.5” between the horizontal slats before placing the screw. Doing this the whole way up the trellis will ensure even spacing and level rails all the way to the top.
There are many varieties of plants that can be grown on a trellis, including climbing hydrangea, ivy, roses, squash, grapes, tomatoes, and cucumber.
Anything with a vine can be grown on a trellis. The trellis is a framework of open lattice that trains the plant by keeping it to a localized spot. This allows the plant to flourish and grow thick. You can grow on a trellis for function or aesthetic or both.
In terms of function, a trellis will give you the advantage of growing off the ground. Not only does this create more space for potential growth, but lengthens the shelf life of the vegetable or fruit.
When the produce grows in the ground, it may become covered with leaves or subject to too much moisture, causing early rot. You may find that you lose a lot of your produce this way.
When grown on a trellis, the produce receives more light on the entire vegetable or fruit, ensuring equal growth and keeping it out of the moist ground.
With any trellis you are adding the benefit of growing upward, which maximizes your garden surface area for growing. This way you can grow vegetables on the trellis while keeping regular flowerbeds in the ground.
Trellises add so much beauty to the yard, too. They are a piece of décor that instantly creates a sense of romantic nostalgia or whimsy, like you are walking into another world.
It’s a sublime experience: you can create a garden room that has living walls. The added shrubbery of the trellis will add some privacy to your yard, as well as shade.
There are all kinds of reason to use a trellis, but once you have one, you will notice many of the other benefits.
